The cast, after all, is impressive: we have Jennifer Aniston bumping into David Schwimmer, but she doesn’t remember who he is; we see David and Victoria Beckham talking about her career as a singer; Jelly Roll looking at the mirror, horrified; Usher dreaming about “playing a halftime show at the Super Bowl some day.” They all have something in common: they lost part of their memory.
It’s the central concept behind the new Uber Eats commercial: you need to remember all the stuff you can get with Uber Eats, and the secret – perfectly explained by Jennifer Aniston – is that you need to forget something else. So that’s it, the joke is ready for the ad: every protagonist forgot something essential, like ten years working together in the Friends cast or being the headliner in the 2024 Super Bowl half-time show. There is also that man forgetting about his peanut allergy, a joke that triggered the famous statement by FARE, and the guy who forgot what “having a seat” means. Victoria and David Beckham suddenly don’t remember about the Spice Girls, the iconic pop band that launched her: was it Paprika Girls? Basil Babes? Jelly Roll even forgot about the tattoos he’s famous for: who did that on his face??
Then there is the song in the background, maybe not exactly the protagonist of the 2024 Uber Eats commercial, but surely a tune we have heard many times in TV series and social networks: it’s a slowed-down version of Dumb Dumb by Mazie. You can find the official video below.
“Everyone is dumb” is the line repeated in the chorus, which went viral in TikTok as background sound for many funny videos. The song was also featured in the soundtrack of the 2022 Netflix movie Do Revenge. Mazie, the song’s author, is an emerging singer born in the U.S.A. She released Dumb Dumb in 2021 as part of her debut EP, The Rainbow Cassette, and the song rapidly became the most streamed of her songs. Her music is considered “alternative pop mixed with vintage psychedelia,” it’s sharp and full of creativity, and Dumb Dumb is a perfect example of her talent.
The song’s lyrics are about how “the internet has degraded the concept of ‘fact.’ The lyrics ‘Everyone is dumb’ just felt like a very fitting synopsis of those conversations,” using Mazie’s words. In the Uber Eats commercial, you just hear the “la la la la” preceding that line, but many of you surely recognized the song from social media.
