The Terminal List Season 2 Ending Explained: The Odessa Attack and What Comes Next

📌 In This Deep Dive

The Terminal List Season 2 ending adaptively translates Jack Carr’s True Believer, framing the Odessa false flag attack as a coordinated geopolitical conspiracy orchestrated by Ivan Zharkov and Vasili Andrenov. Beyond the international crisis, the plot masks a deeply personal blood feud rooted in Vietnam, directly targeting James Reece through corrupted CIA operatives and terrorist proxies. Unpacking the finale’s political mechanics reveals how Zharkov’s revenge scheme sets up showrunner David DiGilio’s potential adaptation of Savage Son for Season 3.

The return of The Terminal List for its second season marks a crucial turning point in James Reece’s story, and things are getting pretty interesting for fans of the show. Season 2 adapts the second book in Jack Carr’s series: while the first season tracked the events of 2018’s The Terminal List, this new chapter follows 2019’s True Believer. And while both the show and the novels follow Reece’s operations fairly closely, everyone is already wondering where things go from here.

Yeah, because the third book in the series, Savage Son, is particularly close to showrunner David DiGilio’s heart. With seven James Reece books already out and an eighth on the way in 2027, it is worth figuring out how (and if) the screen adaptation will keep moving forward. In the meantime, it helps to break down everything that actually went down in The Terminal List Season 2: what the real target of the Odessa attack was, who ordered it, and how it all connects back to Reece.

The Terminal List Season 2 Explained

The plot of The Terminal List Season 2 is heavily political, digging right into modern international conflicts. The story revolves around the war between Russia and Ukraine and the (supposed) peace efforts led by an influential figure along the border, Vasili Andrenov. In the book, Andrenov’s manipulative motives are obvious right from the start, whereas in the show we only uncover his hidden involvement at the very end.

On the surface, Andrenov comes across as the most vocal advocate for a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine, directly involved in talks between the two presidents. Behind that front, though, he’s actually part of a conspiracy to escalate the conflict. Andrenov works alongside Oliver Grey, a mole inside the CIA, with both taking orders from the mysterious “Colonel,” who turns out to be Ivan Zarkov, Andrenov’s father.

The Odessa Attack: The Classic False Flag Formula

Why would a powerful Russian figure pretend to be a champion of peace when his actual goal is to escalate the war? Simple: because the best way to drag the rest of the world into that conflict is to make everyone believe there are other dangerous players involved.

The ultimate goal for Andrenov, and Zharkov before him, was to assassinate the Russian president and make the world think the trigger was pulled by terrorists backed by Ukrainian and U.S. intelligence: a textbook false flag operation. That way, they could hit two targets at once: first, take out a president seen as unfit to advance Russian interests in the war, with Andrenov lined up to take his place; second, convince the entire world that peace isn’t actually on the table because Ukraine and the U.S. don’t even want it. That’s precisely why Andrenov bought Voltstreem Media, Katie’s news outlet: it was a calculated move to control the public narrative surrounding the war.

On top of all this, we have James Reece. Zharkov’s reach went beyond geopolitical targets, extending right into the unit tasked with hunting down Al-Qaeda’s new leader, Amin Al-Nawaz. That was the team that brought Reece in because of his history with “Mo” Farooq, Al-Nawaz’s right-hand man. There was a mole in that group too, Jules Landry, on Zharkov’s payroll through Oliver Grey. Zharkov also arranged for weapons shipped by Raife Hastings’ startup to end up in terrorist hands: Raife Hastings, “Mo” Farooq, all former members of James Reece’s old team.

The truth is, Zharkov had every reason to put James Reece in his crosshairs, and the motivation was entirely personal: years earlier in Vietnam, James’s father, Tom Reece, killed Zharkov’s brother. That is why Oliver Grey murdered Tom Reece when James was just a kid. Zharkov wanted James dead too, but his snipers ended up killing CIA agent Freddy Strain instead.

In the end, Reece and his team figure out Andrenov’s role and take him out. But Oliver Grey and Zharkov are still alive, and their vendetta against James Reece is as strong as ever. Which brings us directly to where the story could go in a potential third season.

Will There Be a Season 3 of The Terminal List?

A green light for Season 3 hasn’t come through just yet, but the possibility is definitely on the radar for both the cast and the show’s creator. In particular, showrunner David DiGilio recently told ScreenRant that he’s a massive fan of Savage Son, the third book in the series, and that if he actually gets to adapt that story, there will be major changes to the plot.

We don’t know yet how a potential third season of The Terminal List would differ from the original book. In Savage Son, we find James Reece recovering from brain tumor surgery, while Oliver Grey and Ivan Zharkov join forces once again with a much more specific goal this time around: killing Reece. The fight for survival is far from over, and Raife and Katie are still right there by Reece’s side.

In short, there’s still plenty of material ready for the screen. At this point, all that’s left to do is wait for the green light.
