Apple TV+’s Dark Matter has reached its biggest plot twist, with many Jasons present in Episode 8: everything is explained in this recap.
We followed the plot carefully, going through the complicated details and the scientific reasons behind every event, but we didn’t expect the twists arrived in Episode 8: Dark Matter surprised all viewers with the presence of multiple Jasons, all in the same universe, all ready to do everything to stay with Daniela. There are not only “Jason One” and “Jason Two” but many more versions of the protagonist, and people are puzzled. Why are there so many Jasons? Who is the original one, and are all the others villains? In this recap, we will ensure everything you saw in Dark Matter Episode 8 is carefully explained and easily understandable. Let’s go!
Dark Matter Episode 8, the full recap: why all those Jasons?
We followed the plot until the previous episode, and in this article, we described in detail everything that happened so far. The original Jason has finally returned to his original world, where the evil Jason is living his life and is determined to take revenge. Episode 8 of Apple TV+’s Dark Matter starts immediately with a shocking scene: the evil Jason is attacked by the original one and prevails, we see the original Jason dead on the street, and we immediately worry: has the villain finally got the better in the series?
The answer comes immediately when we see more versions of the original Jason interacting with each other. The one we followed since the beginning enters his favorite pub and talks with another version of himself, and that’s where we finally understand: “Jason One” is the first protagonist we followed in the plot, whereas “Jason Two” is the antagonist who kidnapped him. After the kidnapping, every different choice he made created another parallel universe, “another Jason One,” determined to return to Daniela. This means that all the Jasons we see in Episode 8 are alternative versions of Jason One, born after the kidnapping.
Let’s take a moment to explain this better. The basic concept behind the plot of Dark Matter is that, after every significant choice we make, a parallel universe is born, with another version of ourselves going to a different life path. In Dark Matter, one version of Jason becomes a world-renowned scientist and invents a box that allows him to travel through all those dimensions. He will reach the world where he married Daniela, kidnap “that” version of Jason (we know him as Jason One, the one we followed since the beginning), and take his place, sending the other one into the world he came from.
From that moment, Jason One does his best to find his original world again. However, while doing this, he keeps making significant choices, and each of those choices creates a new branch of his life: another Jason One who’s doing everything he can to return to his Daniela. All the Jasons we see in Dark Matter Episode 8 are all versions of Jason One created after the kidnapping: they were the same person until the kidnapping, only what happened to them while we watched the series is different. However, they all have the same goal: to get rid of Jason Two and return to their life with Daniela.
Of course, you immediately understand the dilemma: how can Jason One return to his life with Daniela if there are now potentially infinite Jason Ones?
Unraveling the Mystery: who is the Original Jason in Dark Matter?
This is the biggest question viewers have while Dark Matter comes to its ending: is Daniela going to spend the rest of her life with the original Jason One? Who really is the original Jason One?
That’s the whole point of the scientific construct explaining the events in the series: they are all Jason One. They are all a version of Jason who was kidnapped by Jason Two and deprived of their original life. From Daniela’s point of view, there is absolutely no difference between all those “Jason Ones.”
One of those versions will have an idea: he gets arrested, so he will be the first one to explain what happened to Daniela. He will agree on a safe word, so Daniela will discriminate him from all other “Jason Ones.” The plot continues in Episode 8, and other versions of Jason One will try to save Daniela from Jason Two. Daniela and Charlie finally meet with the Jason One with whom the safe word was agreed upon. But is he the one we have followed since the beginning?
Let’s not forget the most crucial element of this situation: there is no difference between the Jason One with the safe word and all other “Jason Ones.” They were all equally victims of Jason Two; there are all the Jason Daniela is married to. We only followed one of them while watching the series, but all others have an equal right to be with Daniela, and Daniela had no specific reason to choose the first one he met when he was arrested over the others. She will just make her decision and choose one, leading to the series’ ending: our full plot recap is here.
