“Pedro Pedro Pedro,” the TikTok raccoon & original song

In April 2024, a viral video took over on TikTok: discover the raccoon, the original song, and the birth of the “Pedro Pedro Pedro” trend.

It’s like one of those jokes we usually tell while drinking with friends: there is a raccoon, a spinning video, and an old dance song from 1980. However, it’s 2024, and the reason why all that went viral is a video created on TikTok, a joint masterpiece that involves a cute raccoon called Ginger, his Russian owner, and a Japanese creator who had a successful musical idea. This is the full story of one of 2024’s most popular things on social networks.

Everything actually started in September 2023. The TikTok user @fleksa30 posts a hilarious video of his raccoon, Ginger, with the camera spinning around it and a power dance tune in the background. However, back in those days, the song was different: it was a remix conceived a few weeks before by the Russian producer DK and two other artists, Mazellovvv and LIDA. You can listen to the original song in this “making of” video on Youtube, whereas below is the original Raccoon video. The date is September 23rd, 2023.

So far, so good. Weeks, months pass, Ginger the raccoon becomes popular on TikTok. Many creators reuse the song and the idea, filming their domestic pets with the phone camera spinning, like the animals are dancing to that music. All this continues until a Japanese TikTok creator, @naofumi_iwatani1998, reposts the raccoon video with the song that will make it viral: a remix of Pedro by Raffaella Carrà. This is the first time the raccoon arrived on the Internet with the “Pedro Pedro Pedro” song. The date was April 8th, 2024. Fleksa30, the raccoon’s owner, shared the video with the Pedro song some weeks later, here.

From there, the history was made. The “Pedro Pedro Pedro” song, which has been stuck in your head for weeks, is a remix by German producers Jaxomy and Agatino Romero. The song was originally released in February 2024, you can find the full version below:

Raffaella Carrà - Pedro (Jaxomy & Agatino Romero Remix)

The original Pedro song comes from the 80s in Italy. The artist who made it was one of the most famous TV personalities of those years, Raffaella Carrà: she was responsible for international hits like Rumore and A Far L’amore Comincia Tu, evergreen songs that are still remixed today. We are talking about music made fifty years ago, but it has an energy that can still make you dance today. Or in 50 more years. You can listen to the original Pedro by Raffaella Carrà here on Youtube.

In the original song, Pedro is a young boy from Santa Fe, New Mexico: if we follow the original lyrics, Raffaella Carrà says that she was a tourist there, and Pedro proposed to guide her on a tour. Apparently, they didn’t really visit the city; as the singer says, “he brought me often to watch the stars, but I didn’t see anything about Santa Fe.” That’s how the chorus goes:

Pedro Pedro Pedro, Pedro, Pe
Basically the best of Santa Fe
Pedro Pedro Pedro, Pedro, Pe
Trust me

And that was how a pop hit from the 80s went viral again in a remixed version, thanks to the creativity of two German producers, a Russian creator, a Japanese TikTok user, and… Ginger, the raccoon: you can’t declare you went through 2024 if you don’t know the “Pedro Pedro Pedro” song.
