Never Ending Story: the story and the meaning of the lyrics

Never Ending Story, the theme song of The NeverEnding Story movie, was composed by the master of early disco music Giorgio Moroder. Giorgio wrote and produced the track specifically for the English version of the film: the original German version doesn’t have this song. The lyrics were written by Keith Forsey, a musician who often worked with Moroder in those years. The singer & performer who interpreted the track is Limahl. The song also has a female voice: Beth Andersen, who recorded her vocal part independently (Beth is American, and Limahl was based in England).

The lyrics describe the movie’s adventure: between the book’s lines, there is an incredible adventure, a story that never ends. Musically, the song has no beginning and no end, fading out like an infinite melody.

Make believe I’m everywhere
I’m hidden in the lines
Written on the pages
Is the answer to a never-ending story

The movie tells a story where fantasy is dying, and only children can save it by keeping using their imagination. Therefore, the song invites the listener to follow their dreams.

Reach the stars
Fly a fantasy
Dream a dream
And what you see will be

Imagination can be real. It’s real for us who dream. We shall not consider fantasy a second-league reality because it’s the world where our creativity and spontaneity live. And sometimes, fantasy is the place where we can find the answers to the questions we have:

Rhymes that keep their secrets
Will unfold behind the clouds
And there upon a rainbow
Is the answer to a never-ending story

That’s why we need to fight for it. Because our imagination exists only because we dedicate time, energy, and space to it. We need to take care of our imaginary world because it can save us when all the rest is falling apart. The song mentions “she” and “her face” as the symbol of a girl we love, representing our fantasy.

Show no fear
For she may fade away
In your hand
The birth of a new day

That’s the real meaning behind Never Ending Story lyrics: our imagination is precious because it makes us humans. We need to fight and keep it alive because, in our fantasy world, there are many answers that will help us in life. And without our efforts, imagination will die, like the world of Fantasia in the movie.
