Beyoncé - COZY (Official Lyric Video)

Cozy: inside the lyrics, their meaning, and the quotes used

Cozy is a song about being proud of what we are. Beyoncé describes how she feels about herself, comfortable and cozy in her skin, inside the character she shows to the world. It’s a way to share self-confidence and self-love with the fans, providing an example of how we should see ourselves.

The song alludes to the fact that they often attack and criticize Beyoncé. She mentions the dagger, the “words you” that can hurt her, and explicitly says that “they hate me.”

Damn, I love the burning of the dagger
From the words that you say
Dancin’ in the mirror, kiss my scars
Because I love what they made

They hate me
‘Cause they want me

But every time she mentions the attacks she receives, she adds a reassuring line, juxtaposing her vital self-love. She loves the scars her experiences left her, and she’s aware that most of the things they say about her come from envy.

The confidence she expresses in the chorus is a model to follow for everybody:

Comfortable in my skin
Cozy with who I am
Comfortable in my skin
Cozy, cozy
Comfortable in my skin
Feet up above your sins
I love myself, go**mn
Cozy, cozy

The song’s lyrics also take their time to describe what made the Beyoncé we know today: the highs and lows, the private life, her changes of look… there are always reasons why people may need to comment about her. And she knows how so many people envy her.

Been down, been up, been broke, broke down, bounced back
Been off, been on, been back, what you know about that?
Been the light, been dark, been the truth, been that King Bey energy
I been thick, been fine, still a ten, still here, that’s all me
Black like love too deep
Dance to the soles of my feet
Green eyes envy me

That’s, therefore, the meaning of the lyrics inside Cozy: be proud of yourself; love your scars and everything you are, and don’t mind what they say about you. You know better than anyone what you are, and the others’ perspectives cannot change that.

The quotes inside Cozy

There are two moments inside the song where we hear a different voice expressing the pride of being black. You can find the lines below:

I’m dark brown, dark skin, light skin, bеige
Fluorescent bеige, b* *h, I’m black

I’m black
I’m probably one of the blackest mother**ers walking around here
In this motherf**ing place
I’m probably one of the blackest mother**ers in this house
I’m black like that

These lines belong to the actress TS Madison, who publicly thanked Beyoncé for these quotes on Twitter. The words are a perfect example of how black people should express the pride of being black, with no need to use inappropriate turns of phrase. Being black is not something that people need to hide. And Beyoncé wanted to add it to her song about self-love, using the words of another public celebrity.

This a reminder

Damn, I love the burning of the dagger
From the words that you say (F**k, yeah)
Dancin’ in the mirror, kiss my scars
Because I love what they made (Ooh, yeah)

She’s a god (Ah-ooh), she’s a hero (Ah-ooh)
She survived (Ah-ooh) all she been through (Ah-ooh, ooh)
Confident (Ah-ooh), damn, she lethal (Ah-ooh, ooh)
Might I suggest you don’t f**k with my sis (Ooh)
‘Cause she comfortable

Comfortable in my skin
Cozy with who I am
Comfortable in my skin
Cozy, cozy
Comfortable in my skin
Feet up above your sins
I love myself, go***mn
Cozy, cozy

So cozy
I love me
They hate me
‘Cause they want me

(I’m dark brown, dark skin, light skin, bеige)
(Fluorescent bеige, b* *h, I’m black)

Been down, been up, been broke, broke down, bounced back
Been off, been on, been back, what you know about that?
Been the light, been dark, been the truth, been that King Bey energy
I been thick, been fine, still a ten, still here, that’s all me
Black like love too deep
Dance to the soles of my feet
Green eyes envy me
Paint the world p***y pink
Blue like the soul I crowned
Purple drank and couture gowns
Gold fangs a shade God made
Blue, black, white, and brown
Paint the town red like cinnamon
Yellow diamonds, limoncello glisterin’
Rainbow gelato in the streets
Renaissance, yachtin’ in Capri

You’re a god (Ah-ooh, you’re a god), you’re a hero (Ah-ooh, you’re a hero)
You survived (Ah-ooh) all you been through (Ah-ooh, ooh)
Confident (Ah-ooh), damn, you lethal (Ah-ooh, ooh)
Might I suggest you don’t f**k with my sis (Ooh)
‘Cause she comfortable

Comfortable in my skin
Cozy with who I am
Comfortable in my skin
Cozy, cozy
Comfortable in my skin
Cozy with who I am
I love myself, go***mn
Cozy, cozy (Okay)

I’m cozy (I’m cozy)
I’m juicy (I’m juicy)
You hate me (You hate me)
‘Cause you want me (‘Cause you want me)
I’m swaggy (I’m swaggy)
Effortlessly (Effortlessly)
That’s how God made me (How God made me)
So, b* *h, pay me (So pay me, ching-a-ling, ching, ching)

(I’m black)
(I’m probably one of the blackest motherf**rs walking around here)
(In this motherf**ing place)
(I’m probably one of the blackest motherf**rs in this house)
(I’m black like that)

Comfortable in my skin
Cozy with who I am
I love myself, goddamn
Cozy, cozy

Unique is what you are
