Sunshine: the lyrics and their meaning

In Sunshine, Steve Lacy sings about the familiar feeling when you break up with someone you still love and wish you had a second chance. The singer says it was hard to hear from her that “it’s over” a couple of months ago, and now that he saw her again, he realizes that he took the breakup harder than her.

Lookin’ like it’s all catchin’ up to you lately
Been a couple months since I told you, “It’s over”
Caught me off guard when I saw you last week
Oh so tough, but you bluffed when you had me
Sayin’ “My ex” like my name ain’t Steve
Gave you a chance and some dopamine
Safe to say, after me you peaked

Steve Lacy collaborated with Fousheé for this song to have the female part of this virtual conversation. When Fousheé starts to sing, she admits that, as the female protagonist, she was less emotionally involved than him.

I admit that I wasn’t lost
You’re takin’ it twice as hard
Criticize me all you want

The lines above represent the first sad half of the song. After that, a ray of hope emerges, and we could also assume from the title, Sunshine, that the song contains a positive message. The chorus already tells us they are still there for each other if needed.

But I’m always gonna be where you are (Where you are)
Where you are

It looks like the female part slowly changes its position while the song continues. In the beginning, she admits she was fine after the breakup; in the second verse, she asks Steve to manage his feelings and try to get along because every separation is much more complicated if bad feelings remain.

Put those feelings back where they came from
Why can’t we just get along? Or, at least, let’s get it on?

During the song, Steve manages to persuade her somehow because, in the outro, Fousheé seems to reconsider her point of view. And she sings freely, “I still love you.”

I mean
If I’m always gonna be there, then I might as well
I don’t know about you, but, ah, come on
I still, I still love you, I still, I still love you

At the bottom of the song’s lyrics and their meaning, with Sunshine, Steve Lacy tells us how (imaginary) he succeeded in getting along again with the girl who broke up with him. He still loves him, and deep inside her, she still feels something for him. And when feelings are still alive, staying close to each other is more effortless.

Sayin’ “My ex” like my name ain’t Steve

Still’ll give you d**k anytime you need

But I’m always gonna be where you are (Where you are)
Where you are
But I’m always gonna be where you are
Where you are
But I’m always gonna be where

I took the high road, do it through every word
Is it still that special if the whole world has owned?
And you always chasin’, you can’t replace it
Put those feelings back where they came from
Why can’t we just get along? Or, at least, let’s get it on?
Honestly, I wouldn’t mind, I would do it one more time
I would let you cut the line just so I could be right where you are

Where you are, where you are
But I’m always gonna be where you are
Where you are
But I’m always gonna be where you are (Where you are)
Where you are
But I’m always gonna be where you are
Where you are
But I’m always gonna be, yeah

I mean
If I’m always gonna be there, then I might as well
I don’t know about you, but, ah, come on
I still, I still love you, I still, I still love you
I still, I still love you, I still, I still love you
I still, I still love you (You, you, you)
I still, I still love you (You, you, you)
I still, I still love you (You, you, you)
I still, I still love you (You, you, you)
I still, I still love you
I still love you, you
I still love you, you
Love you, I still love you
I still love you, damn
