Traitor: the meaning of the lyrics

Traitor by Olivia Rodrigo is about the ended relationship between her and the ex-boyfriend, Joshua Bassett. Olivia expresses all her anger and hate towards him, because she loved him so much, and since long time he seemed involved with Sabrina Carpenter. She was jealous, but he always denied any romantic involvement. However, as Olivia reveals in this song, he started dating her just two weeks after they broke up.

And ain’t it funny how you ran to her
The second that we called it quits?
And ain’t it funny how you said you were friends?
Now it sure as hell don’t look like it

Olivia doesn’t try to mince words about it: he claimed that they were just friends, he said Olivia she was paranoid about it, but after all she was right. She doesn’t have proofs that he cheated on her while they were together, but she doesn’t need it: even if he didn’t, for the way he acted after the break up, he’s still a traitor. And that’s what she explicitely says in the chorus:

You betrayed me
And I know that you’ll never feel sorry
For the way I hurt, yeah
You talked to her when we were together
Loved you at your worst, but that didn’t matter
It took you two weeks to go off and date her
Guess you didn’t cheat, but you’re still a traitor

She’s angry, in a natural reaction of hate typical of when you loved someone so much and then you need to move on. And it’s totally understandable that lots of girls could relate to Traitor and the meaning of its lyrics: when your boyfriend cheated on you, this looks like the perfect song to play. A lot of anger underneath, but sad notes that shows the overwhelming feeling of being cheated on. The title “traitor” is stylized in lower case, to further diminish the importance of the referred subject.

For who is curious about Olivia’s relationships after the one discussed in this song: she managed to move on quite quickly and already in 2021 she started dating Adam Faze. They’ve been together for a while and reportedly broke up in 2022.

The complete lyrics

Brown guilty eyes and
Little white lies, yeah
I played dumb, but I always knew
That you talked to her, maybe did even worse
I kept quiet so I could keep you

And ain’t it funny how you ran to her
The second that we called it quits?
And ain’t it funny how you said you were friends?
Now it sure as hell don’t look like it

You betrayed me
And I know that you’ll never feel sorry
For the way I hurt, yeah
You talked to her when we were together
Loved you at your worst, but that didn’t matter
It took you two weeks to go off and date her
Guess you didn’t cheat, but you’re still a traitor

Now you bring her around just to shut me down
Show her off like she’s a new trophy
And I know if you were true, there’s no damn way that you
Could fall in love with somebody that quickly

And ain’t it funny? All the twisted games
All the questions you used to avoid
Ain’t it funny? Remember I brought her up
And you told me I was paranoid?

You betrayed me
And I know that you’ll never feel sorry
For the way I hurt, yeah
You talked to her when we were together
Loved you at your worst, but that didn’t matter
It took you two weeks to go off and date her
Guess you didn’t cheat, but you’re still a traitor

God, I wish that you had thought this through
Before I went and fell in love with you
(Ah-ah-ah)
When she’s sleepin’ in the bed we made
Don’t you dare forget about the way

You betrayed me
‘Cause I know that you’ll never feel sorry
For the way I hurt, yeah
You talked to her when we were together
You gave me your word, but that didn’t matter
It took you two weeks to go off and date her
Guess you didn’t cheat, but you’re still, you’re still a traitor
(Ah-ah-ah)
Yeah, you’re still a traitor

Ooh-ooh-ooh
God, I wish that you had thought this through
Before I went and fell in love with you
