Steve Lacy, Mercury: the lyrics and their meaning

Mercury, Steve Lacy new song, is about how hard it is sometimes to deal with romantic relationships and make them work, where you have several different sides of yourself. Steve Lacy mentions Gemini, his zodiac sign, known as a sign with two faces, two separate parts or personalities. He also mentions Venus in retrogade, an astrological event that according to zodiac has a big influence in romantic relationships. And with these two arguments Steve explains how she feels good and bad about his relationship at the same time.

Love so fast and back out again
Speeding
When I should ease in

In these lines on the first verse we start to understand what’s going on. The singer admits that he’s normally driven into emotions very fast, and then quickly retreats. This is a first, important symbol of the way his two personalities influence his behavior and puts the relationship in danger. Hurting also his girl, unfortunately, as the following lines show.

Oh, I know myself, my sins
Dug my pit, then I fell in
Pulled the trigger, killed us both
Lesson learned but truth gets old

He’s aware of the way he is, he does his best to avoid that his problems affect the relationship, but his dark side is stronger and he’s not able to fight it. He’s also aware that hating himself for the way he is doesn’t help. This is what he clearly says in the second half of the song.

I looked up at the ceiling as I draft my “I’m so sorry” text
Don’t regret the choice I chose but do regret the mess I made
I see you hurt, I wish I could just hold you tight and close
Don’t need long, just wanna say, “I love you and miss you most”

So comes the metaphor of mercury, like a poison that runs in his brain and makes him behave that way. He’s unable to win against all this. So he just accepts it, giving up the fight. And admitting his guilts. Even saying that he’s much more than two-faced: he has 23 multiple personalities, like the protagonist in Split.

Gemini scope give me depth ’til I’m dead
But I can’t seem to get the f**k out of my head
Well, f**k it, I’ll just cop a Porsche instead
I do as I please and you see where it lead
Guess somethin’ bad ain’t ’bout to happen to me
You think I’m two-faced, I can name twenty-three

The chorus is actually a sort of celebration for the very peculiar way he lives relationships. Sometimes it’s heaven, sometimes it’s hell. And a lot of uncertainty.

Little of heaven, little unpleasant (Ooh, ah)
I don’t know (Ooh, ah)
Little of pleasure, little depression (Ooh, ah)
I don’t know (Ooh, ah)
Little of heaven, little unpleasant (Ooh, ah)
I don’t know (Ooh, ah)
How can I tell if? How can I measure? (Ooh, ah)
If I don’t know (Ooh, ah)

In the end of the song, he humbly asks her if she still wants to be next to him in this rollercoaster. He can’t help, but it might not be as bad as we think. And the girl answers that yes, she can give it a try. Maybe she can’t play the part of a serious commitment on her side, but she can accompany him in this specific period. Being a girlfriend until the (Venus) retrogade is done.

Excuse me if I lied
I forgot I said that
Can you forgive my tongue?
I’ll show you where my head at
I don’t think I’m the one
But I could be your girlfriend
‘Til retrograde is done

This is therefore the true meaning of Mercury lyrics: my nature is complicated, I have two different sides of me that affect my ability to make a relationship work. But this is what I am. And if you want, you can stay with me, despite the troubles. I will still do my best on my side.

Gemini
I’m a myth and I’m a legend
Whom never wins
And might not ever play again
Keep falling in (Keep falling in, yeah)
Love so fast and back out again
Speeding
When I should ease in

Oh, I know myself, my sins
Dug my pit, then I fell in
Pulled the trigger, killed us both
Lesson learned but truth gets old

Little of heaven, little unpleasant (Ooh, ah)
I don’t know (Ooh, ah)
Little of pleasure, little depression (Ooh, ah)
I don’t know (Ooh, ah)
Little of heaven, little unpleasant (Ooh, ah)
I don’t know (Ooh, ah)
How can I tell if? How can I measure? (Ooh, ah)
If I don’t know (Ooh, ah)

I lookеd up at the ceiling as I draft my “I’m so sorry” text
Don’t rеgret the choice I chose but do regret the mess I made
I see you hurt, I wish I could just hold you tight and close
Don’t need long, just wanna say, “I love you and miss you most”

Oh, I know myself, my skin
Rolling stones don’t crawl back in
Daddy’s faults fell down on me
Break that curse for sweet relief

Little of heaven, little unpleasant (Ooh, ah)
I don’t know (Ooh, ah)
Little of pleasure, little depression (Ooh, ah)
I don’t know (Ooh, ah)
Little of heaven, little unpleasant (Ooh, ah)
I don’t know (Ooh, ah)
How can I tell if? How can I measure? (Ooh, ah)
If I don’t know (Ooh, ah)

Mercury running amuck in my mind
Can’t tell if I’m winning or falling behind
Ba-ba-ba-ba, ba, ba-ba-ba-ba (Ooh, ah, ooh, ah)
Ba-ba-ba (Ooh, ah, ooh, ah)
Venus in retrograde got me in bed
And thinkin’ ’bout all of the shit that I said
Ba-ba-ba-ba, ba, ba-ba-ba-ba (Ooh, ah, ooh, ah)
Ba-ba-ba (Ooh, ah, ooh, ah)
Gemini scope give me depth ’til I’m dead
But I can’t seem to get the f**k out of my head
Well, f**k it, I’ll just cop a Porsche instead
I do as I please and you see where it lead
Guess somethin’ bad ain’t ’bout to happen to me
You think I’m two-faced, I can name twenty-three

My layers, all these sides
Could you stick by for the ride?
It’s a thrill, and I don’t even know how to feel
It might be too real
Might be too—
Real, might be too real, real
I said, “Might be too—”
Might, I said, “Might be too real, real”
I said, “Might be too real”

Excuse me if I lied
I forgot I said that
Can you forgive my tongue?
I’ll show you where my head at
I don’t think I’m the one
But I could be your girlfriend
‘Til retrograde is done
