Glimpse of Us: the meaning of the lyrics

Glimpse of Us is a dark love song where Joji compares his current relationship to the previous one and the love he felt for his ex; Joji is not able to forget the love and the feeling he had in his last relationship so he tries to relive those feelings (that “Glimpse of us”) with her current partner. Without success, unfortunately.

Joji is perfectly aware that the girl he’s with right now is a great person. In the first lines of the song he refers to her current partner, saying that she’s perfect, she’s able to turn rain into a rainbow. Nevertheless, the author wonders why he still thinks about his ex, the girl with whom he’s talking right now.

She’d Take The World Off My Shoulders
If It Was Ever Hard To Move
She’d Turn The Rain To A Rainbow
When I Was Living In The Blue
Why Then, If She’s So Perfect
Do I Still Wish That It Was You?
Perfect Don’t Mean That It’s Working
So What Can I Do?

In a sort of internal confession to his previous love, he asks her how that is possible. She’s with a perfect girl right now, but inexplicably he doesn’t feel it works right. The chorus therefore represents a tough confession: when she looks in the eyes of the woman he’s with right now, he’s actually looking for a glimpse of what he experienced with his previous partner. From here the title of the song, “Glimpse of Us“, and the true meaning of Joji lyrics.

‘Cause Sometimes I Look In Her Eyes
And That’s Where I Find A Glimpse Of Us
And I Try To Fall For Her Touch
But I’m Thinking Of The Way It Was
Said, “I’m Fine” And Said, “I Moved On”
I’m Only Here Passing Time In Her Arms
Hoping I’ll Find A Glimpse Of Us

In the second verse of the song, the author wonders if his previous girl feels the same with the man she’s currently with. He asks her if she feels the same as when she was with him. And he wonders if one day she will feel the same melancholy he feels right now. If that happens, they will virtually meet again in the territory of their shared sadness.

The full lyrics

She’d Take The World Off My Shoulders
If It Was Ever Hard To Move
She’d Turn The Rain To A Rainbow
When I Was Living In The Blue
Why Then, If She’s So Perfect
Do I Still Wish That It Was You?
Perfect Don’t Mean That It’s Working
So What Can I Do? (Oh!)

When You’re Out Of Sight In My Mind

‘Cause Sometimes I Look In Her Eyes
And That’s Where I Find A Glimpse Of Us
And I Try To Fall For Her Touch
But I’m Thinking Of The Way It Was
Said, “I’m Fine” And Said, “I Moved On”
I’m Only Here Passing Time In Her Arms
Hoping I’ll Find A Glimpse Of Us

Tell Me He Savors Your Glory
Does He Laugh The Way I Did?
Is This A Part Of Your Story?
One That I Had Never Lived
Maybe One Day You’ll Feel Lonely
And In His Eyes, You’ll Get A Glimpse
Maybe You’ll Start Slipping Slowly
And Find Me Again

When You’re Out Of Sight In My Mind

‘Cause Sometimes I Look In Her Eyes
And That’s Where I Find A Glimpse Of Us
And I Try To Fall For Her Touch
But I’m Thinking Of The Way It Was
Said, “I’m Fine” And Said, “I Moved On”
I’m Only Here Passing Time In Her Arms
Hoping I’ll Find A Glimpse Of Us
