The rare demo recorded by Amy Winehouse when she was 17

Posted by

It has been shared some days ago by Gil Cang, a London producer who back in 2001 was writing music for several pop artists, to help them gain in visibility. One of those artists was a young girl called Amy Winehouse, 17 years old, with her wonderful voice that, as Gil said, “just blew us all away”. Amy would sign for a major label (Island Records/Universal) in 2003, the year when her first album Frank was released. The lost demo has been recorded when she was still a beginner, trying to seek labels’ attention. The song is My Own Way, you can stream it below.

It’s a rare listening because her label intentionally destroyed all her old demos in 2011, exactly to avoid eventual future releases produced by her incomplete vocals. This demo was in Gil Cang drives since that days: “I’ve had it knocking about for so long. I found it again last week and thought – I’ll put it out there so people could hear it.” There you have it now: the pure, innocent voice of a little girl who soon will become one of the most powerful singers of the new generation. Not mentioning her powerful lyrics.
