Taylor Swift, Carolina: the lyrics and their meaning

Taylor Swift loved the book from which the movie is inspired, and when the movie has been announced, she did the best to be part of the soundtrack. She composed Carolina on purpose, and she described it as “something haunting and ethereal to match this mesmerizing story.”

In the song there is a girl talking, through the voice os Taylor Swift. There are two lines that keep coming back, that give to the lyrics a peculiar meaning:

And you didn’t see me here
No, they never did see me here

Apparently the girl is trying to distance herself from something that happened “here”. It may be accused of something. This part could have a connection with the movie, and the book it’s based on, where the protagonist is a girl who grows up alone and, as adult, is suspected of a murder.

The way this girl tries to explain her life is through Carolina, who actually takes most part of the lyrics. Carolina seems a presence inside the protagonist. Somebody that lives inside her and accomanied her through her whole life. We can guess this already in the first lines of the song.

Carolina creeks
Running through my veins
Lost I was born
Lonesome I came
Lonesome I’ll always stay

That would match the haunting character of the song. A song where we hear a woman saying “It wasn’t me there. I would never go in those places. But Carolina would. And she lives inside myself”. From here the chorus of the song:

And she’s in my dreams
Into the mist, into the clouds
Don’t leave
I make a fist, I make it count
And there are places I will never ever go
And things that only Carolina will ever know

Getting at the bottom of the lyrics meaning, according to this interpretation Carolina is a song about a woman who’s not fully in control of herself. There might be things that she did and she’s not aware of it. Because Carolina, the other personality inside her, sometimes takes control and go places. Places where somebody saw her.

If that’s the meaning of the song, it would represent actually one of the most haunting and thrilling songs ever made by Taylor Swift.

The complete lyrics

Oh Carolina creeks
Running through my veins
Lost I was born
Lonesome I came
Lonesome I’ll always stay

Carolina knows
Why for years I roam
Free as these birds
Light as whispers
Carolina knows

And you didn’t see me here
No, they never did see me here

And she’s in my dreams
Into the mist, into the clouds
Don’t leave
I make a fist, I make it count
And there are places I will never ever go
And things that only Carolina will ever know

Carolina stains
On the dress she left
Indelible scars
Pivotal marks
Blue as the life she fled

Carolina pines
Won’t you cover me?
Hide me like robes
Down the back road
Muddy these webs we weave

And you didn’t see me here
No, they never did see me

And she’s in my dreams
Into the mist, into the clouds
Don’t leave
I make a fist, I make it count
And there are places I will never ever go
And things that only Carolina will ever know

And you didn’t see me here
They never did see me here
No you didn’t seem me here
They never saw me

Oh Carolina knows
Why for years they’ve said
That I was guilty as sin
And sleep in a liar’s bed
But the sleep comes fast
And I’ll meet no ghosts
It’s between me
The sand and the sea
Carolina knows
