Wild is the Wind: rediscovering David Bowie’s representation of love

Posted by

Wild is the Wind has always ben one of the most emotional love songs I’ve ever heard. Originally composed by Dimitri Tiomkin and Ned Washington for the soundtrack of the homonymous movie, it was performed and recorded for the first time by Johnny Mathis in 1957.

Perfect example of how poetry and music can melt together. You just need to surf on some verses to understand the power of the composition:

Let the wind
Blow through your heart
For wild is the wind
Wild is the wind

With your kiss
My life begins

The version below is the interpretation of David Robert Jones, better known by the stage name of David Bowie. Legend has it that he decided to cover this song in honor of Nina Simone, since she also made a beatiful version out of it.

Wild is the Wind - David Bowie

Only Bowie could sing love and pain in this way, turning this song into an immortal interpretation. Because love wraps, makes you lose the reason, the references; you feel carried by a wild wind, and when you are in love you don’t want it to stop.

Like a leaf clings
To the tree
Oh my darling,
Cling to me
For we’re like creatures
Of the wind

When you are in love, you let yourself go, you lose all defenses and you remain at the mercy of forces that you cannot control. We are transported like leaves, and just like them, after the flight, you risk to crash down, because feelings can change color quickly. Never forget, the wind is wild.

A gem that not everyone knows, one of Bowie’s most underestimated songs. A song that can let you rediscover a specific side of David Bowie, capable of transforming one song with his interpretation.

Here the full lyrics:

Love me, love me, love me, love me
Say you do
Let me fly away
With you
For my love is like
The wind
And wild is the wind
Wild is the wind

Give me more
Than one caress
Satisfy this
Hungriness
Let the wind
Blow through your heart
For wild is the wind
Wild is the wind

You
Touch me
I hear the sound
Of mandolins
You
Kiss me
With your kiss
My life begins
You’re spring to me
All things
To me

Don’t you know you’re
Life itself

Like a leaf clings
To the tree
Oh my darling,
Cling to me
For we’re like creatures
Of the wind
Wild is the wind
Wild is the wind

You
Touch me
I hear the sound
Of mandolins
You
Kiss me
With your kiss
My life begins
You’re spring to me
All things
To me

Don’t you know you’re
Life itself

Like a leaf clings
To the tree
Oh my darling,
Cling to me
For we’re like creatures
In the wind
And wild is the wind

Wild is the wind
Wild is the wind
Wild is the wind
Wild is the wind
